Steel column design
Description
Steel columns
In situations where the loadings are high, it may not be possible to design a masonry pier small enough to fit in. In these circumstances steel columns are often needed. For the same load capacity, a steel column will be much more slender than a masonry pier. A steel column will be the most inobtrusive support. If the column is at ground floor level, it is likely that the column will need a pad foundation.
Our structural calculations for steel columns include the design of the column and the column baseplate. Our structural design also provides details for any holding down bolts which may be necessary. If the column is at higher level, it can normally sit on a padstone.
The steelwork will normally need fire protection. This will increase the overall size of the column.
We need the following information to design steel columns
architectural layouts or sketch drawings with dimensions, so we can work out all the loadings on the column
the height of the column
type of construction (concrete or timber floors, brick or block walls etc)
